NIE in Spain: what it is and how to get it

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is the foreigner identification number used in administrative, financial and legal procedures. Important: the NIE on its own is not a residence permit and does not give you the right to live or work in Spain.

Who needs an NIE?

  • to buy or sell property;
  • to work, run a business or register as autónomo;
  • for financial and tax transactions;
  • to sign certain contracts and complete other official procedures.

NIE and TIE: what is the difference?

  • NIE — the foreigner identification number.
  • TIE — the plastic foreigner identity card confirming your residence or stay status.

What documents do you need for an NIE?

  • a valid passport and a copy;
  • an application on form EX-15;
  • proof of the reason for obtaining the NIE;
  • payment of the fee — form 790, code 012;
  • additional documents depending on your situation.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing the NIE with the TIE or with residence.
  • Not stating the specific reason for obtaining the number.
  • Using outdated forms or paying the wrong fee.
  • Not checking document and appointment requirements in advance.

NIE: frequently asked questions

Can I get an NIE without residence?

Yes, in certain cases an NIE is issued for economic, professional or social purposes without applying for residence.

Can I get an NIE while outside Spain?

Yes, provided the applicable requirements are met, in some cases the application is submitted through a Spanish consulate.

Does the NIE need to be renewed?

The number itself usually does not expire. However, documents, permits or residence status may have their own validity periods.

Can I work in Spain with just an NIE?

No. The right to work depends on your nationality and the corresponding permit or legal status.

How long does it take?

It depends on where you apply, appointment availability and your specific situation. It is best to confirm exact timeframes before starting the procedure.

TIE in Spain

The TIE is the plastic foreigner identity card confirming your identity and your residence or stay status in Spain.

  • First TIE (primera TIE)
  • Fingerprinting (toma de huellas)
  • Appointment booking (cita previa)
  • TIE renewal (renovación)
  • Lost or stolen card (pérdida o robo)
  • Collecting your card (recogida)
  • Change of address (cambio de domicilio)

What documents do you need for a TIE?

  • a valid passport;
  • an EX-17 application form;
  • proof of payment of the government fee;
  • a photo in the required format;
  • the decision granting or renewing the permit, where applicable.

TIE: frequently asked questions

How is the TIE different from the NIE?

The NIE is the foreigner identification number, while the TIE is the physical card confirming the relevant residence or stay status.

When should I apply for my first TIE?

After the corresponding permit has been granted, if the procedure provides for a card. Timeframes depend on your specific situation.

Does the TIE need to be renewed?

It is important to distinguish between the validity of the card and that of the residence permit. Depending on the procedure, you may need to renew the permit and obtain a new card.

What should I do if I lose my TIE?

It is advisable to record the circumstances of the loss or theft and confirm the procedure for obtaining a duplicate.

Can I change the address on my TIE?

After moving you may need to update your address details. The steps required depend on your situation.
